Got CPR/First Aid certified today because......LIFE!!! I’m sure many of us are familiar with the terms “heart attack” and “cardiac arrest” and have possibly used them interchangeably. Today I learned that they are far from the same, and knowing the difference could save a life!
Heart attacks ➡️ happen when blood flow is blocked to part of the heart muscle. You can think of heart attacks as a clot problem. A clot forms in the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the heart. As the heart continues to pump blood, the longer the person goes without intervention, the greater the damage to the heart. Symptoms of heart attack for a male include severe discomfort or pain in the chest, pain in the shoulder/arm, nausea, heartburn, shortness of breath, and for females, pain in the arm, neck, jaw or back. If you have baby aspirin on hand, you can give the victim one pill every 5 minutes for a total of 3 pills in 15 minutes. (In Florida, you can not physically give them the pills, they have to be conscious and take it themselves).
.
Cardiac arrest ➡️ happens when the heart develops an abnormal rhythm and can’t pump blood. You can think of it as a rhythm or “electrical”’problem. An individual in cardiac arrest will often drop directly to the floor without symptoms, become unresponsive, and start gasping or stop breathing altogether. Death will ensue if the person does not receive treatment within approximately 10 minutes. Every minute that passes, their chances of survival decrease by about 10%. If you suspect someone is having a heart attack or is in cardiac arrest, first call 911 immediately. If the person is conscious, ask for permission to help; if unconscious, they have implied their consent. Next check for breathing. The easiest way to do so is to watch for the rise and fall of their chest. If the individual is not breathing activate the AED device if available. If not, begin CPR.
CPR: ✳️ 30:2- This ratio include 30 chest compressions to ever is 120/minute at a depth of 2 inches.
✳️ Remember the rate for chest compressions is 120/minute at a depth of 2 inches. You will likely break their ribs if you are doing it right; DONT let this stop you.
✳️ Apply am AED device as soon as it becomes available.
✳️ Do not go more than 10 seconds without chest compressions. Get bystanders involved if you become exhausted.
✳️ Never put yourself in danger trying to save someone. Use a pocket mask when delivering rescue breaths as it’s likely the victim will throw up and you don’t want it in your mouth 🤮
As freaky as it may sound, today was absolutely amazing and god forbid this type of emergency situation arises, I *think* I could remain calm, confident and know how to react. I encourage all of you to become CPR-certified!
